Slovak police explosives experts on Saturday destroyed by a controlled explosion a U.S. Air Force 500 lb. bomb from World War II that was found near the village of Nova Bosaca in western Slovakia. The bomb was discovered by collectors who roam the forests with metal detectors searching for WWII memorabilia. The bomb was found about four hundred meters from the nearest houses in the village and therefore it had to be taken a few hundred meters further away to be detonated. According to police experts, it was an M-43 bomb probably from a US Air Force B-17 bomber that was shot down by Germans in 1944 while on a bombing mission from a base in Italy to the industrial city of Ostrava in the occupied Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.
