Construction Sector had Highest Employment Growth in June Again

The construction sector in Slovakia again posted the highest year-on-year growth of employment with 8.8 percent in June, according to the Statistics Office. Staff also rose in the sector of real estate, rentals, trade activities and other services by 7 percent and the transport sector by 5.8 percent. Employment grew 3.1 percent in the wholesale sector, 2.1 percent in the retail business, 1.9 percent in industry and 1.1 percent in the car sale and maintenance. Employment dropped 2.2 percent in the postal service sector and 0.6 percent in the telecommunications sector. Employment in hotels and restaurants has not changed from last June.

In the first half of this year, 600,500 people on average worked in industry, of which 557,600 were engaged in the industrial manufacturing. The construction sector registered 175,300 employees. Retail sector employed 159,700 people, the sector of real estate, rental, trade activities and other services 155,700, the wholesale business 135,000, the transport sector 95,700, hotels and restaurants 50,700, car sale and maintenance 28,500, and the postal and delivery service sector 17,300. As many as 9,500 people worked in the telecommunications sector.

Six months into this year, the number of employees in the construction sector increased 7.9 percent y/y. The transport sector witnessed growth of staff of 6.2 percent. The number of employees went up by 5.8 percent in the sector of real estate, rental, trade activities and other services, 3.3 percent y/y in the telecommunications sector, 2.6 percent in industry, 2.4 percent in car sale and maintenance, 1.6 percent in the retail business, 1.5 percent in the wholesale sector and hotels and restaurants registered a 0.1 percent increase. In the monitored period, employment slipped 1.7 percent in the postal service and delivery sector.
