Selected facilities of hospital and outpatient health care from all over Slovakia, with the exception of Bratislava County, can apply for funds from the Health Care Operational Program of the EU structural funds. Health Minister Ivan Valentovic reported that partly budget-subsidized organizations under the supervision of the Health Ministry and Slovak counties, as well as non-profit organizations, can apply for non-returnable financial grants. "A condition is to settle all due obligations toward social security provider Socialna Poistovna, health insurance companies and tax authorities", said Mr. Valentovic. The first calls for the drawing of funds should be released in June or July of this year, and the first funds could be drawn already by the end of this year.
Slovakia can draw a total of EUR 250 million in the health care sector from the European Regional Development Fund in the 2007-2013 period. Of this, EUR 193 million should be allocated for modernization of the medical system of hospitals. The projects will be co-financed from the state budget. The Slovak government earmarked more than EUR 44 million for this purpose, while the project will be financed by the EU to 85 percent.
