Job stress has become a common and cost problem in the workplace, leaving few workers touch. Studies report one-fourth of employ view their jobs as the number one stress in their lives. Another survey says 40% of American workers describe their jobs as very stress.

In today's economy upheavals, downsizing, mergers and bankrupt, millions of workers have lost their jobs. Millions more have been shifted to familiar tasks within their companies and wonder how much longer they will be employed. Millions face the press of fewer health and retirement benefits and the feeling they have to work longer and harder just to maintain their current economy status. The thing they all have in common is job stress.

There are many job conditions which can cause stress. Heavy workload, few rest breaks, long work hours and shift work, tasks, which do not utilize workers' skills, experience and know and provide little sense of relevance can be very stress. Another cause may be the manage style characterized by lack of workers´ participation in decision-making, poor communication in the organization or lack of family-friend policies. Other risk factors include bad social environment, lack of support from coworkers and supervisors, uncertain job expectations, too much responsibility as well as unpleasant or danger physical conditions such as crowding or noise.

The loss of a job can be devastating, putting unemployed workers at risk of physical ill, marital strain, anxiety, depression and even suicide. It affects every part of life, from what time you get up in the morning, to whom you see and what you can afford to do.

Job-related stress is particularly likely to become chronic because the time spent at work is a large part of our day life. Job stress takes a serious toll on your health. Early signs of job stress are usually mood and sleep disturb, low concentration, upset stomach, headaches and disturbed relation with family and friends. Typical symptoms of lasting job stress are chronic insomnia, absent, depression, addiction, smoking, extreme anger, frustration, risk taking and physical ill e.g. heart disease, chronic headaches, stomach and back problems. A number of studies suggest that chronic job-related stress is as great a threat to health as smoking or not exercising.

Stress has become an integral part of our profession lives. We cannot avoid it. But we should try to cope with it. Surely, your job is important but it is just one part of your life. You should spend quality time with your family and friends who are an excellent source of emotional and moral support. If you feel you are no more able to control stress at work, you should consult a health specialist.
