A telephone interview that ruling coalition partner Slovak National Party (SNS) leader Jan Slota gave to the SME daily on Wednesday regarding the possibility that the ruling coalition would deal with registered partnerships of homosexuals has stirred extremely negative emotions not only among the public but also his coalition partners. Mr. Slota asked the journalist whether she was a "dyke" and also used this word in speaking about homosexuals. He called the editor "scum" at the end of the interview.
Deputy chairman of the People's Party- Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (LS-HZDS) Miroslav Jurena and Deputy Prime Minister Dusan Caplovic (SMER-SD) told the media that they think politicians should behave decently. Mr. Caplovic also called Mr. Slota's statements unfortunate. Mr. Jurena remarked that when people drink alcohol, they should still be able to control themselves. Spokeswoman for Prime Minister Robert Fico, Silvia Glendova, said the Cabinet Office would not comment on these inappropriate remarks of Mr. Slota in any way.
